How to Serve

Original Equipment 1890's

Canton's very first piece of fire fighting equipment dates back to the late 1800's. At that time the city of Canton was comprised of about 450 residents, a small court house, and the Dixie Hotel (where Bonnie and Clyde was later rumored to have stayed).

This piece of mobile fire fighting equipment, in reality a large hose reel on wheels, was kept on the front lawn of the Canton Court House. If a fire were to break out the local businessmen would wheel this extinguisher to the site and suppress the blaze.

First Fire Station 1930's

The first station came along in the 1930's and was located on Terrell Street under the water tower. Fire stations and Fords seem to go hand in hand. In those days stations were usually in close proximity to the local Ford Dealership. Many of the service managers and mechanics doubled as the firemen. Canton was no different; along Hwy. 64 was the Ford dealership, on the back side of the block stood the water tower. Directly below was the red siren system which is still there today. Just beside the water tower was, and still, is the first actual station. This was a two bay station which means it had two bay doors for trucks and equipment.

Second Fire Station 1950's

The second station came along in the 1950's; this one was just a few block away on Edom and Wills Point Streets. This station had advanced to a four door station complete with four pieces of equipment.

This is now the location of the First Baptist Church of Canton. However they have kept it up and are using the old station as their bus barn at the present time.

Present Fire Station

The third station came along in the mid 1980's. This most recent station was built by the fire men. It is currently located at 1390 S. Hwy. 19 in Canton. This facility is a seven bay station complete with eight pieces of equipment.

The department currently has one paid chief, four part time employees and thirty five volunteer members. The station is staffed by four paid volunteers who serve full time during First Monday Weekends.
